JAPANESE ACUPUNCTURE & CHINESE MEDICINE Susan Meredith Lic.Ac., M.B.Ac.C Tel: 01450 363764 info@phoenixtherapies.co.uk
Acupuncture is well known as an ancient medical science originating in China, often incorporating herbal treatment alongside the insertion of fine needles and the use of warming moxibustion in body meridian channels. These influence the energy of the patient in order to assist healing. Because of the length of time it has been practiced, there is a huge body of knowledge available for treating all health complaints.
Susan Meredith practices Japanese style Acupuncture. This is a very gentle, but powerful style, often not requiring the deep insertion of needles in order to be effective. Because of this, it is an effectively pain-free and very relaxing treatment.
Acupuncture is well known in the field of pain relief and for musculo-skeletal problems where it can be available from physiotherapists within the NHS. It is not so well known that it can be used for many other conditions. In China, when a patient sees the doctor, acupuncture will be available to them for whatever their problem is. As acupuncture is wide spread throughout East Asia, probably as many people receive it as receive Western Medicine world-wide.
Osteopathy is a system of diagnosis and treatment which lays its main emphasis on the structural integrity of the body. Although best know as a treatment for bad backs and painful muscles and joints, it can in fact be used to treat a wide variety of illness. An osteopath assesses a patient from a mechanical, functional and structural standpoint and then uses a variety of manipulative techniques to return the functions to normal.
Cranial Osteopathy is a specialized area of osteopathy which uses the rhythmic pulse of the cerebrospinal fluid for diagnosis and treatments. It is a particularly gentle technique and therefore most suitable for babies, pregnant woman and others of similarly sensitive disposition.

Massage is very effective in alleviating muscular tension (chronic and acute). It is detoxifying, toning and improves structural alignment It is helpful in dealing with mental and emotional stress and instils a sense of peace, balance and well-being.
Reflexology is a treatment where pressure is applied systematically to both feet. This encourages energy to travel throughout zones in the body, releasing blocked energy. This treatment is similar to massaging the internal organs of the body. It can help therefore with respiratory, digestive, reproductive and circulatory imbalances.
Treatments are available on Tuesdays and Fridays at Phoenix Therapies. The massage treatment lasts for one hour and reflexology takes 50 minutes .
Marina also makes aromatic soaps and sells aromatherapy massage oils, pure essential oils and Quest supplements.
Aromatherapy massage is massage therapy but with highly concentrated plant oils, called essential oils, added to the massage oil or lotion. How does aromatherapy massage work? The nostrils are attached to a part of the brain called the limbic system. The limbic system controls emotions and influences the nervous system and hormones. When you inhale essential oil molecules, messages are transmitted to the limbic system and affect heart rate, stress level, blood pressure, breathing, memory, digestion, and the immune system. Essential oils are also believed to be absorbed through the skin.
Quintus has been practising acupuncture since 1996. He studied at the College of Integrated Chinese Medicine in Reading, and also spent time in China at the Zhejiang College of Chinese Medicine. Having practised in London, Edinburgh, Hawick and Peebles, Quintus has also worked with voluntary groups such as LGBT, Body Positive and the Depression Alliance.
Acupuncture is widely considered to be beneficial for clearly defined complaints such as headaches, vomiting, neck & back ache and dental pain, as well as for more general feelings of ill health such as nausea or low energy. Acupuncture is also often used in conjunction with western medicine. Increasingly women are choosing to have acupuncture to support them throughout pregnancy, labour and after giving birth. At your first meeting, Quintus will ask you a range of questions to evaluate your health and to design a treatment plan specific to you. Quintus also practices in Edinburgh at Napiers Clinic and is available for home visits in Edinburgh and the Scottish Borders.
